Driving Ohio Winters
Ohio winters can vary just as our four seasons do throughout the year. It is not uncommon for northeastern Ohio in the dead of winter to experience sunny days, dry roads and mild temperatures. However, it is also not uncommon for us to have temperatures below freezing for 30 days in a row. The weather in our area is a challenge. Freezing rain, snow, sleet, slushy roads, ice, and black ice not to mention snow drifts are all part of living here. We have lake effects and a snow belt. Certain areas can get dramatically more snow ( the snow belt ) than neighboring areas only a few miles away. Depending on the wind direction and certain weather conditions, you can drive from a cold crisp sunny day right into a winter white out. We do have extreme diverse weather situations to contend with at times.
Safety
We know to bundle up when going out. We know to allow for more time when driving. We know to make sure our vehicle is ready for the task. Yes, we have our unique challenges each day as we drive to work, school, shopping or even for a doctor's visit. It's all part of living here in northeastern Ohio. Even a relatively minor accident can be dangerous if you are stranded while waiting for help. The cold windy air can cause severe damage to exposed skin. Try to stay warm and cover up while waiting for help to arrive.
Accidents Happen
Even when we do everything we know to do, accidents can happen. There are many dynamics that factor into just about every moment of our daily drive. The weather conditions can change dramatically. The road conditions can vary as well. Some roads are treated better than others while some roads get no treatment at all. Storm drains can get clogged or obstructed allowing water and ice to pool up in areas that normally would be clear. Some drivers may not have any experience in driving in poor winter weather conditions. New teenage drivers may be driving on winter roads for the very first time. There is a learning curve for how you drive on poor road conditions. Each vehicle has it's own unique handling abilities on wintery road conditions. Sometimes no matter how cautious you are an accident can happen.
Wreckless Driving
There are some people that just drive to aggressively or even recklessly when road conditions warrant a more cautious approach. Putting themselves and others in danger of a serious accident. Poor judgment or just plain reckless behavior while driving can cause serious consequences. Not allowing a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you is asking for trouble. You need the extra distance to stop especially if the roads are wet, snowy, or icy. There is no reason to drive aggressively or dangerously at any time and especially during the harsh cold winter months. You are putting yourself and the lives of others at risk by doing so.
Remember, be prepared, practice safe driving habits and allow ample time.
